A new year always means a new you — which has us all looking for a fresh start to 2024.
In the cosmetics department, all eyes will be on the eyes when the hottest trends for 2024 include an injection of smouldering sexiness, or so reports Cosmopolitan, where glowing eyes full of sensuality and mystery are the hot new trends. Throw in some dazzle and glitter not just for eyes but lips and cheeks, too, and you have the makings of a brand new you for a brand new year.

After the dreary 2023, along with lingering leftovers from the pandemic, we all need a shot of glamour and glitz to get us up and running. So don’t be surprised to see vibrant metallic lips to go with long, luxurious eyelashes, and, that 80s fave — a high gloss finish on the cheeks in 2024.
Even eyebrows are in for a new look — not so much that strict, uniformed style big in celebrity culture, but something feathery and feminine, to add to the allure.
Also sticking around: the reverse eyeliner trend — a major TikTok beauty feature — in which the liner follows the bottom lash line instead of the traditional top.
What else is trending this new year? Eyelids rich with smoky shades that are smudged and creased, to give a look of romantic mystery, perfect for upcoming Valentine’s Day.
Love your lips! But, unlike last year’s big, bold, heavily outlined lips, this year’s trend is to go gentle with natural hues, keeping the emphasis on your eyes instead.
What does 2024 hold in store beauty-wise? We reached out to several well-known beauty professionals who always have their fingers on the country’s cosmetic pulse, and here’s what they had to say:

Q: What beauty look is trending this new year?
A: Glitter and sparkle will always be in style, and not only on your eyes. Incorporating a touch of glitter on the lips, accent eyeliner and shimmery body spray or hair spray is the way to go. Apply shimmer over top of a matte lip. The Quo Beauty Shimmer Lip oils offer a stunning pop for a matte lip finish.
Q: What 2024 beauty trends are you seeing?
A: Lots of neutrals — people are creating monochromatic looks playing off one colour and creating an entire look around it, like the latte and espresso makeup trends, perfect for every age. I recommend the Kylie Cosmetics Classic Matte Palette and the Nudestix Nudies Matte Blush in Sunkissed Pink for your face, lips and eyes – a one-and-done product. I also use Nudestix Nudies Matte Bronzer in Bondi Bae as a base for eyeshadow and contour.
Q: What are your top tips for younger women for 2024?
A: I’d recommend a multipurpose product — makeup that’s quick and easy, without sacrificing what it will look like throughout the day. The Quo Beauty Lip & Cheek Mud is a great multipurpose product that can be used on the lips and cheeks. I also love the Pixi On-the-Glow blush stick – for teens dabbling in makeup, it gives them a flush of colour without being too much. I also love the Masque Bar Pimple Patches — having them on hand really saves you.

Q: What about mature women?
A: Don’t be afraid to add a little bit of shimmer. It doesn’t have to be glitter — a touch of sheen will look great. The Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks have a fine shimmer that you can use to highlight the inner corners of your eyes, the bridge of your nose and the high points of your cheeks. It’s a cream product as well, so it won’t settle into fine lines.
Q: What are the top two or three items for people of all ages who are looking to update their makeup bag in 2024?
A: Start with a setting spray. Not a lot of people are using it and it’s the best thing you can incorporate in your makeup routine. A lot of setting sprays contain skin care ingredients so it’s going to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day. Plus, it will make your makeup last longer.

Q: What beauty look is trending in 2024?
A: “Icy” or “Frosty” makeup is trending; this includes creating a sheer, glass-skin finish and frostbitten cheeks look – look for a serum foundation like Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow; for cheeks, look for Quo Beauty Featherweight cream blush in either Dreamy, for darker skin, or Angelic for fair to medium tones. You just need a minute amount — and don’t forget the tip of your nose!

To complete the look, apply R.E.M. beauty Midnight Shadows Lustrous Liquid Eyeshadow in “Lab coat” to the high points of the face and inner half of the eyelid.
Q: What beauty trends are you seeing for 2024?
A: I think 2024 will look as though 2016 and 2020 had a baby. Skin-caring makeup and minimal base products will continue to thrive, but more on the matte side. We may see more soft-glam happening on the eyes: liquid shadows, half-lashes, and, dare I say, the return of liquid winged liner. Natural brows are in – this may be the end of the feather/laminated soap brow.
Most trends can be adapted for any age. Faux freckles, such as Jason Wu The Freckled Boy, are a fun way for people in their teens and 20s to cover blemishes or help makeup appear more natural and skin-like.
Q: What are your top tips for younger women for 2024?
A: Younger women might consider trying a new colour palette, and experimenting with new shades to find which shades are most flattering. If one normally sticks with pinks and neutrals, try reds, browns, corals and mauves. Kylie Cosmetics lip kits are a great way to explore new lip shades — tap some of the lipstick on your cheeks for a monochromatic look.

Q: What about the mature person?
A: Two words: face primer. Mature women always ask how to achieve a flawless foundation base. Using the correct primer will make a world of difference. The Jason Wu Magic Spell Potion 5 in 1 primer is my favourite right now – it does it ALL in one step. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimizes pores, controls oil and moisturizes and brightens the skin.
Q: What are the top two or three items for people of all ages who are looking to update their makeup bag in 2024?
Upgrade your beauty bag with a new fragrance: Ariana Grande scents are a great choice for any age, without breaking the bank. “Pink Cloud,” an amber vanilla fragrance, adds a sensual, youthful spring to anyone’s step. Liquid eyeshadows are so easy to apply without any eye primer or foundation. Lastly, good brushes are the difference between an easy, flawless application and a frustrating one. The new Quo Beauty multi-purpose complexion brush blends foundation and cream blush/counter like a dream.

Q: Best frame of mind beauty-wise for the new year?
A: Our beauty mantra is simple: Do what makes you feel your best. That includes getting enough sleep! Our pioneering study with a leading research institute, Case Western Reserve University, found that poor sleep contributes to twice the signs of aging and 30 per cent greater water loss. I suggest Night Repair Serum to help your skim perform optimally. As well – it’s never too early to practice safe sun-screening. “From helping prevent premature aging to visibly reducing hyperpigmentation — the benefits of consistent sunscreen can’t be emphasized enough. Go with makeup that protects, such as Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturizing Makeup SPF 45.

Q: The eyes have it this year. What do you recommend?
A: Precision Eye Liner. I always reach for our Bobbi Brown Ink Liner in Blackest Black for a graphic edge. Also, for effortlessly fresh skin, start with lightweight tints and build coverage where you need it, with targeted concealing. I recommend Skin Concealer and Corrector Sticks rather than using the same amount of fuller coverage all over – this keeps everything looking like real skin rather than makeup.

Lastly, we saw Pumpkin Spice and Latte makeup all over social, so we know that monochromatic makeup is here to stay for 2024 and we love multi-purpose products that help us achieve these looks. Check out Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, and Long-Wear Cream Shadow Sticks which can be used as shadow and liner.
